DO YOU NEED AN ARTIST TO TURN YOUR STORY INTO MANGA?

Published: March 24, 2026 · By Studio Gijutsu Editorial · 6 min read

Writers often pause their manga ambitions because they believe they must find and pay an illustrator before anyone will take their story seriously. The reality is quite different.

One of the most common questions writers ask is whether they need to hire an artist or have finished manga sample pages before approaching a studio. While having character art or an illustrator partner can be wonderful, it is not a prerequisite for submitting an original story.

1. What Development Studios Actually Look For

A manga development studio evaluates the structural foundation of your story:

  • Character drive: Does the protagonist possess a clear, urgent want and an internal contradiction that drives decisions?
  • Visual storytelling awareness: Does the writing create vivid moments that naturally belong on a panel—silences, physical confrontations, and body language?
  • Narrative rhythm: Is the pacing designed for page-turns rather than blocks of internal prose?

If those narrative elements are strong, pairing the story with an artist whose style matches the tone is part of the studio's collaborative mission.

2. How Writer and Artist Collaboration Works

When Studio Gijutsu selects a story, we work with both the writer and artists to shape the final comic:

  1. Character Design Sheets: Creating turnarounds, facial expressions, and clothing silhouettes based on the writer's description.
  2. Thumbnail Layouts (Name): Drafting loose rough panels to test visual pacing, balloon placement, and eye flow.
  3. Inking and Shading: Bringing the world to life through clean linework, screentones, and setting details.

Where a project moves forward, we aim to pay artists fairly, with terms agreed in writing per project based on budget.

3. Starting With What You Have

Do not wait until you have thousands of dollars to commission sample artwork. Focus on writing a compelling, tightly structured concept.
